India to Bhutan Motorcycle Trip

Aren’t we lucky that we share the border with such a gorgeous country! Bhutan is no ordinary place, shrouded in mystery and magic, this Himalayan kingdom that fiercely guards its traditions while embracing global developments.

But we are not just headed there like tourists. Our trip starts from Bagdogra in West Bengal and we ride through Bhutan and then the Duars Part of India to conclude the ride in Bagdogra. We take the route along Bhutan’s west-east highway which is as challenging as it is thrilling . The entire road trip is dotted with winding roads that go up and down thousands of feet, keeping your adrenaline racing along with that bike !!

This is going to be an epic trip and believe us when we tell you that the views along the way are going to be spectacular, to say the least !!

“Kusuzangpo” That’s how people greet each other in Bhutan.

We’ll  get there and ride around and explore the most beautiful parts of this Himalayan gem with stunning valleys and mountain views and quaint villages. And all this while the hypnotic chanting of the Buddhist Monks and sounds of the temple chimes keep us company.

This is a surreal experience!

And there is no better way to experience it than the freedom of being on a bike, in a small group of your BEEP Mates; That don’t cramp your style and yet brings support and offers help in case of emergencies along the way! Of course, we will have a certified mechanic and guide with us along the way as well.

You have a choice of bikes too if you are picky and if u have your own bike, nothing like it.

NOTE: In case you don’t want to ride but still want to come along, we have a Back-Up Four Wheeler with us throughout the trip and you can ride in that!

The last date to Apply for this BEEP Trip is 30th March.

  • Day 1:

Land in Bagdogra any time of the day and relax and get ready for the craziest adventure of your life!

  • Day 2:

Bagdogra – Paro after Immigration in PhuentsholingThis is the day we ride through the smooth National Highway that passes through paddy and tea plantations. After 155 kms, it is Bhutan!

Although the two countries are separated by a gate, your senses will register the difference between the two countries instantly. We first halt at the immigration office to get permits sanctioned for the tour. Post the permit formalities, we explore the town of Phuentsholing, its bustling markets and the local cuisine and then head over to Paro and reach before Sunset.

  • Day 3:  Explore Paro

The Day begins early. All have early breakfast followed by a 2.5 hour hike up to the TaktsangDzong or Tiger’s Nest Monastery. It is undoubtedly one of the most majestic, mesmerizing and memorable places you will ever see. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava flew to this exact spot on the back of a tigress in the 8th century and meditated here for 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days and 3 hours. He is also known as second Buddha for introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. A temple complex was built here in 1692 and is most popular for the thirteen tiger lair caves in which he meditated.

We finish the trek by afternoon and then visit the National Museum if time permits.

The evening will be spent exploring the city and the local bazaars. Overnight stay at Paro.

  • Day 4:  Paro – Thimphu

We have our breakfast at the hotel we ride through the Highest Motorable Pass in Bhutan “Chele La” and ride to the capital city of Bhutan – Thimphu. The evening is spent enjoying the beauty of this place and visiting popular places. Overnight stay at Thimphu.

  • Day 5: Thimphu

TashichhoDzong (dzong means castle), that apart from housing the throne and offices of the King, offers beautiful views of Dechencholing Palace – the residence of the King of Bhutan – and the Wangchhuriver. Other must visit places include Memorial Chorten and KuenselPhodrang, where the biggest statue of Buddha in the world overlooks Thimphu.

  • Day 6: Thimphu – Punakha – Phobjikha

This day begins early as we prepare to leave for our first pass in Bhutan – the Dochula at 10301 feet. The ride to Phobjikha is an easy one. We have our lunch on the way and then check in to the hotel for night stay. The ride up to this place is nothing short of breathtaking, with dense vegetation and blooming flowers keeping you company and snow-capped mountains looming in the background. We spend the evening exploring the town and observing the locals and their lifestyle. A visit to the Dzong, one of the most beautiful monasteries, would definitely be worthwhile. Overnight stay at Phobjikha.

  • Day 7: Phobjikha – Bumthang

Once again we state the day early and after breakfast ride to Trongsa. On our way, we stop to visit the 18th century stupa called Chendebji Chorten, built by Lama Shida, modelled after the famous Swayambhunath Stupa of Nepal. Legend has it that an evil spirit took the form of a gigantic snake and to cover its remains this structure was erected. This is one of the longest riding days of the trip, but the whole experience is soothing to the eyes as well as the soul. It is also on this day that we ride across two of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan – Pele La and Yotong La. Overnight stay at Bumthang.
