Croatia has always been known for its delectable wines. If you weren’t tempted enough to go wine tasting in Croatia yet, here’s something that will definitely make you want to get packing right now. Two words: Edivo Vino. Edivo Vino is Croatia’s first underwater winery and it is magical.

Located about an hour’s drive from Dubrovnik in the town of Drače on the Pelješac Peninsula, the underwater winery is owned by Ivo and Anto Šegović and Edi Bajurin.

The most amazing part about this underwater winery is that it is located on an old sunken boat at the bottom of the Mali Stone Bay. As if it wasn’t adventurous enough, you can dive and discover jars of wines being stored on an old boat under the sea.

It’s like Pirates of the Caribbean of wine connoisseurs. That’s one treasure I’d like to seek! The wine itself is named ‘Navis Mysterium,’ translated to mysteries of the sea.

The wine is first aged above ground for three months. It is then transferred into clay jugs. These jugs are made from amphorae, a special type of clay that helps in aging the wine, giving it a pinewood-like aroma.

These jugs are carved out of amphorae, with two handles and a narrow neck. These are coated with two layers of rubber and have a strong cork to prevent any sort of leakage. It prevents the wine from leaking out and the seawater to seep in.

They’re then left to age for two years at a temperature of 15-17 degrees and the final product is gorgeous. These wine jugs, when removed from the boat are beautiful, covered with corals and plants.

The owners believed that the sea is the ultimate cooling agent. The saltwater of the sea provides natural cooling to the wines, making it smooth and delicious.  Bonus, you can also keep the jugs.

If you’re keen enough you can go on a diving expedition to the winery. You can drink the wine straight from the amphorae jugs at Edivo Wino’s bar.  If not, Edivo Vino also ships these wines. Such wines don’t come cheap though. A bottle of this Edivo Vino wine costs about £270. Order it here.
